New York State Wine - Local Our Commitment at O'malia's is to visit several New York State Wineries each year. We feel that New York State has some of the best wines in the country. Personally touring the wineries helps us pick some excellent selections from each winery to keep in stock at our store. We are eager to hear of new wines and wineries that customers may have already visited and tried. Customer requests are welcome and we would be happy to keep requested wines in stock. It may not be well known, but Northeast America is the home of the grape, with dozens of species. There are more varieties grown here than anywhere else in the world. Chautauqua County boasts a higher percentage of vineyard acreage than anywhere in the United States outside of California. This is partly the result of historical tradition and partly due to an ideal microclimate that helps produce grapes of the most excellent quality.
Chautauqua County is the western-most region of New York
State and is the gateway to the wine and grape country which
blankets the southern Shore of
Lake Erie.
Chautauqua County has a grape and wine heritage that lies
deep in the history of the area.
The signing of the Farm Winery Act in
1976 allowed individual grape farms to establish small wineries
limited to a maximum production of 50,000 gallons per year. Passage
of this law in NYS resulted in an increase in the number of wineries
from 14 in 1976 to over 80 in 1986.

The history of the Merritt Estate
dates all the way back to the late 1800's. Back then the original
homestead belonged to the parents of Marguerite Merritt-Sample,
which means Merritt Estate has been in the family since the late 19
th century. William T. Merritt turned the estate into a fully
functioning winery back in 1976, and since then his son, Jason C.
Merritt, joined the family operation in 1998. The father and son duo
dedicate themselves to their small vineyard and devote their time
and energy into producing quality fruit for their impeccable wines.
For them, it's not about quantity, but about the value of harvesting
superior grapes. Merritt Estate is located in the largest grape
growing region of New York State. The grapes and wines produced in
this area rival the quality of premium vintages throughout the
world. The winery offers tours, tastings, a gift shop, and catering
for weddings and other events at the winery.
At O'Malia's we carry Merritt's full
selection of wines. They are all excellent selections,
and depending on your tastes, there is something for everyone to
enjoy. *We would also like to note that Merritt's Bella Rosa has

Grapes have been grown on the Johnson
Estate for well over a century, and the Johnson Winery, established
in 1961, is now the oldest exclusively estate winery in New York
State. All of the choice European and American wine grapes used to
make our wines are grown within 3000 feet of the winery. This
allows us to take full advantage of the chateau system of
wine-growing and making. Every vintage is a “handcrafted” limited
production, and the entire vinification process, including the
crushing, pressing, fermentation, aging, and bottling occurs on the
estate under the Johnson Family’s direct control. Thus, the superb
quality of our wine is constantly supervised from the vineyard to
the bottle, and, like the finest wines of
Europe, Johnson
Estate wines are “grown, vinified and bottled in the Chateau
Tradition.”
